A ‘Dreamcatcher’ is very popular hanging decoration that you can buy ready-made or in kit form. A wide variety can be viewed here Dreamcatchers
Like many people we have a dreamcatcher hanging up at home. But what is a dreamcatcher and why do people hang them up in their windows?
Peakles saw it and wanted to know what it was and how to make one and so we decided to find out a little more about them and to make our own. We read a good book called Dreamcatcher by Audrey Osofsky (ISBN053105988x) Dreamcatcher Story Book and then we looked online for more information and liked this particular site http://www.native-languages.org/dreamcatchers.htm
It tied in well with the stitching activities we have been doing at home using pipe cleaner sewing needles (the pipe cleaner sewing needles are a great idea I read about on Rainy Day Mum http://rainydaymum.co.uk/creative-pipe-cleaner-tool)
So we decided to make a dreamcatcher of our own.
Materials – painted paper plates, hole punch, wool or string, beads, feathers or foam shapes scissors (for adult use only)
As many of you will know we use paper plates as paint holders and mixing trays for most of our art projects. I keep these and use them as basis for other projects. Making a dreamcatcher was a perfect way of using up some of these pre-painted paper plates.
I used a small plate and a smaller bowl to trace a line around and cut out a ring shape. Peakles watched as I carefully punched holes at regular intervals on the ring.
We then made a pipecleaner needle and threaded it with wool.
I showed Peakles how to create a ‘spider web’ by threading the needle through the holes.
She enjoyed doing this and soon had made a beautiful ‘web’.
Peakles chose foam flowers to add to her dreamcatcher ( you can add beads, feathers or other shapes to the wool) Finally we added some wool to the bottom of our finished dreamcatchers and tied more flowers onto them.
Peakles enjoyed this so much that we will be making more ‘dreamcatchers’ in the near future using foraged materials in the Autumn (Fall).
