How to Make a Great Recycled Fabric Bag
We are making a recycled fabric bag as part of our celebration of Earth Month for another year! The theme for the series this year is upcycling and this fits in very well with our thrifty and ‘make it yourself’ ideas.
Last week we made a Garden Wind Chime from recycled metal and wood. Ideal for making an interesting feature in the garden or backyard!
This week we are using some recycled cloth to make a fabric bag! This is a simple way to convert an old long sleeved top into a simple bag with a minimum of stitching too!
How to Make Your Recycled Fabric Bag
You will need these simple tools and materials to make your fabric bag
- a long sleeved top
- needle & thread or a sewing machine
- large button
- a loop of fabric
First, turn the top inside out and line up the two edges at the bottom of the top. Pin these together and then sew along the bottom, you can either use a double stitch or blanket stitch to make a strong seam.
Next, turn the top back to the right way around. Place one sleeve inside the other and stitch these together to make your bag handle.
Then, stitch a small loop of fabric that can loop over the large button, to the middle of the top neck on one side. Fold this over onto the opposite side of the top to ‘close’ the bag and mark where the loop lies.
Finally, stitch the large button on the mark and now you can securely close your bag!
We loved making this fabric bag and it means that we have lots of bags to match different outfits too!
