Powerful Business Women
at BeDigital Launch
Ever wondered how others manage to ‘have it all’? Have you thought it is just ‘other people’ who have a lucky break? Or have you ever told someone about your brilliant idea, only for them to knock your confidence and tell you that it has been done before?
Yesterday I attended the Be Digital Launch in Northumberland. Some of these questions were raised by the main speakers or in conversations I had other business women attending. It was refreshing to hear that even the most successful business women have their moments of doubt and uncertainty but the main driving force behind their success seemed to be an inner self-belief and determination.
I was proud to sit with such a diverse audience, from new start-up businesses to well-established ones, and listen to stories of real women who are making a difference. But the main thing that stuck with me was the open manner of these women. They spoke of personal doubts and hardships that they have overcome. Doubts and hardships that many of us have or will face during our lifetimes. I sat and listened, laughed and nearly wept as these stories were honestly told with determination, emotion and humility.
Michelle Mone is an excellent speaker who kept the audience enthralled and engaged as she led us from her humble beginnings to becoming a highly successful business woman. But what struck me was how important her close family were to her. These core people constantly keeping her grounded and focused on Michelle the person and not Michelle the public figure. Not only was her talk genuine, humorous and from the heart but she gifted pearls of wisdom throughout the talk. I take away with me three main things from her speech:
- Work hard, play hard and Give Something Back
- Stay true to yourself and keep your integrity
- Change your mindset: You can do ANYTHING, the only person who is holding you back is YOU
I was fortunate enough to speak with Michelle for a few minutes on her own and we spoke about self-determination and taking responsibility for your actions, be they about your business, your personal life or about your own health and well-being. She gave me some great tips on all manner of things including the benefits of juicing and how to start a gentle fitness routine! It was clear that she is a true believer in having a healthy body means a healthy mind!
The other speaker who shone for me was Layla from French Grey Tales. Her personal story of overcoming heartbreak and hardship as well as explaining her company’s ‘sharing knowledge’ ethos struck a chord with me as a businesswoman and teacher.
I also bumped into another business woman after the launch was winding down Julie Johnson from The Success Club who gave me some great advice in the past. We were chatting and suddenly the whole day crystallised in a few words with her.
I said, “I know the only thing that is holding me back is me. What I really need is to ‘just get over myself’!”
Just Get Over Yourself!
All the doubts, the fears, the worries, personal insecurities and so on. To go forward, I have to ‘JUST GET OVER MYSELF!’
I came away inspired, energised and excited for the future! I immediately set up my new business (website and so on coming soon), started thinking about my 10-year plan and how I am going to implement it and I am going to apply for the Springboard Programme being offered to 20 business women in Northumberland. If I am successful then that will be awesome, if I don’t get on the course then I will still have learnt something from applying.
Hurdles and obstacles are just opportunities in disguise! It is about time that I grabbed them with both hands and not let go!
It is true, life is not a rehearsal.
Time to come out of the wings and take that centre stage.
