A Great Small World Play Idea for Kids
Peakles loves cats. She has cuddly toy cats, pictures of cats, cups with cats on and little toy cats. She also enjoys watching the Cats the Musical on DVD and hopefully we will be able to take to the theatre to see it soon. It seemed an ideal opportunity to expand this into a small world play idea.
I took a large plastic box and added some graffiti influenced decorations and some small cardboard boxes and tubes. I also added some tyres, some small pebbles and some wooden doll’s house objects. After putting daisies and buttercups in the box for weeds and a toy lamp to represent a street light, I placed an assortment of toy cats in the box.
Peakles loved playing with this and soon recognised it as a set from Cats. She asked for the CD to be played and she acted out a few of the scenes from the musical too. Soon the cats were singing out loud and Peakles was having a wonderful time making up her own cat scenarios.
She then asked me to read some of T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats as well. After this she began making up some names for the toy cats and began making them dance about in a funny way as she repeated their names.
Finally Peakles decided that the cats had to go to sleep and hid them away under the cardboard boxes!
