Spooky Halloween Dough! Want to do something different with your kids this Halloween? Then try our music inspired Spooky Soda Dough play!
We are enjoying combining sensory play doughs with music and you can read more about why we are using different types of music on the link below.
Our Spooky Soda Recipe
Please note that this is NOT an edible dough so should NOT be used unsupervised
or with children who like to taste/eat dough!
2 cups flour
2 cups corn flour
1 cup bicarbonate of soda
2-3 cups of hot water
Place all the dry ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Slowly add and mix in the water until you have a soft, malleable dough. Leave until the dough cools enough to handle. The bicarbonate of soda will make the dough rise and have a stretchy, fluffy texture.
Setting the Scene for
Spooky Soda Dough Play
We placed the dough onto a board and added some black and orange paint, some toy spiders and other spooky items!
Music and Dough Play – My Observations
We mixed the paint into the dough by squashing, rolling and pulling the spooky dough. Then we added the spiders and other spooky objects whilst we listened to the classical music. The dough was rolled flat and the spiders pushed into it to leave spider tracks!
Then we added all the mixed dough to a bowl and added some more water. The spooky dough soon became a gloopy liquid because of the cornflour. It became a horrible colour and when we added all the toy spiders it reminded us of horrible, squelchy mud. We all had great fun holding the toys and letting it all run down our hands!
Soon it was time to clean up with some warm, soapy water and plenty of warm towels!
Music Chosen
The music we chose for our Spooky Soda Dough Play were all classical music. You can visit our Witty Hoots YouTube channel and listen to the pieces we chose for this sensory dough activity or listen to them here:
We have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the 12 Months of Sensory Dough and we look forward to next month when we will be writing about our Music Inspired Cloud Dough.
