 Rocks and Pebbles Sparkle Dough

Peakles and I are really excited about taking part in the 12 Months of Sensory Dough this year.  We love being outdoors and are always collecting things from walks along the beach or in the countryside.  This is one of the reasons why we are featuring Nature Led Dough – incorporating Outdoors and Nature into our dough theme each month.  For more information about the 12 Months of Sensory Dough then read about it on our main page here.

Rocks and Pebbles Sparkle Dough Recipe

Please note that this is NOT an edible dough so should NOT be used unsupervised or with children who like to taste/eat dough!

1 cup of plain flour

1 sachet of cream of tartar

1/2 cup of salt

1/2 cup of water

1 tbsp of of plain cooking oil

1/2 cup of coloured aquarium gravel

1/4 cup clear glitter

Peakles added all the dry ingredients (except the glitter and the gravel) to a large saucepan and then mixed in the water.  On a low heat we stirred the mixture until it became dough like and pliable.  After taking off the heat I removed the dough, let it cool slightly and kneaded it until it was smooth – be careful as the dough can still be quite warm.  I then left it to cool for 5 minutes. Once it was cool it we added the glitter and gravel and kneaded it until it was well mixed into the dough.

Playing and Exploring

We put the sparkle dough on a table and added some larger pebbles as well.  Peakles really enjoyed playing with this dough and was fascinated by the gravel in the dough.  She dug it out with her fingers and then squashed it all together again.

Peakles began rolling out the dough and then began pressing the pebbles into it.  After a while she began to build layered towers with alternating flat stones.  We decided they looked a little like a bridge or cairn that we had seen on our holidays in Scotland.  I loved how she was  being reminded of some of the outdoor places we have seen through playing with the dough.

She then began to cut an mould the dough using her hands and fingers.  Finally she selected some cutters from her play kitchen and chopped all the dough up into tiny pieces before squashing it all back together again.

We have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the 12 Months of Sensory Dough and we look forward to next month when we will be writing about our Nature Led Clean Mud Dough.

If you are a fan of Pinterest then please pop along to the group’s Sensory Dough Board for more inspiration on how to introduce sensory play doughs to your children.  Here are this month’s co-hosts and links through to their posts.  Such a great wealth of ideas on how to create, experiment and play with Sparkle Dough!
